Cervical cancer may not always cause noticeable symptoms, particularly in its early stages. However, as the cancer progresses, some common symptoms may become evident. These include:
- Unusual Vaginal Bleeding: This is the most common symptom. It may occur after sex, between periods, or after menopause. Any bleeding that is different from your normal pattern, particularly if you've already gone through menopause, should be taken seriously.
- Changes in Vaginal Discharge: Look out for changes in the consistency, colour, or smell of your vaginal discharge. While changes in discharge can be due to various reasons, it is important to note any significant alterations.
- Pain or Discomfort During Sex: Experiencing pain or discomfort during intercourse can be a symptom of cervical cancer.
- Unexplained Pain in Lower Back or Pelvis: Persistent pain in your lower back or pelvis that cannot be explained by other causes is another symptom to be aware of.
Remember, these symptoms can also be caused by conditions other than cervical cancer. However, if you experience any of these symptoms, especially if they are new or have changed, it's important to consult your GP. Early detection and treatment can significantly improve the outcome.
